This clinical workshop is designed for professionals in mental health, medical, and human services settings who work with individuals at risk for suicide. Participants will learn effective strategies for counseling individuals and families on temporarily reducing access to firearms, medications, and other potentially lethal means during periods of heightened suicide risk.
Participants will learn to:
- Describe the evidence supporting means safety as a suicide prevention strategy.
- Explain how reducing access to lethal means can decrease suicide risk.
- Identify practical options for temporarily increasing means safety.
- Integrate means safety planning into risk assessment and crisis response protocols.
- Apply motivational interviewing techniques to means safety conversations.
- Use culturally sensitive and technically accurate language when discussing firearms and firearm safety.
