When someone is in emotional distress or experiencing a mental health crisis, getting help should be fast, easy and stigma-free. That’s why the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline exists. By simply dialing 988, anyone in the U.S. can connect 24/7, every day of the year with trained counselors who provide free, confidential support.
This month, we’re highlighting 988 Day on September 8th (9/8), a national day of awareness created to spread the word about this life-saving service. Many people still don’t know about the 988 Lifeline, and together we can change that.
Here’s how you can take action on 988 Day and beyond: Encourage your community to save 988 as a phone contact—much like you’ve saved 911—and share the number far and wide.
- Post about it on social media using #988Day.
- Share downloadable materials from the 988 Day Toolkit, including flyers, posters and graphics to help amplify the message 988 Lifeline.
- Encourage workplaces, schools and faith communities to set up informational displays or internal communications.
Foster Open Conversations: Talking about mental health can feel difficult, but it's essential for breaking stigma.
- Start caring conversations with friends, family, or colleagues.
- Faith communities can welcome healing by encouraging empathy, offering support and gently reminding members that reaching out for help takes courage 988 Lifeline.
Engage Creatively: 988 Day is about your voice and your vision. You might:
- Host a community event, online or in-person, discussing mental health.
- Partner with local artists to design 988 murals or artwork.
- Organize workshops (like safety-planning or coping-skills sessions) for schools or youth groups.
You are never alone. If you or someone you love needs support, dial 988. On 988 Day, and every day, let’s make sure help is always just three digits away. Visit
