Hospitalization

The Ohio Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) operates regional psychiatric hospitals in six locations across the state. It has specialized facilities that provide short-term, intensive treatment to patients in both inpatient and community-supported environments. The hospitals also deliver comprehensive care to patients committed by criminal courts. The ADAMHS Board of Cuyahoga acts as a gatekeeper for the Civil admissions to Northcoast Behavioral Health Care Hospital in Northfield, Ohio.

Pink Slipping

Some individuals may experience a severe mental health emergency that requires immediate hospitalization. This process is sometimes called “Pink Slipping,” which references the document utilized to obtain emergency hospitalization for an individual who is 1) mentally ill subject to hospitalization by court order, and 2) represents a substantial risk of physical harm to him/herself or others if allowed to remain at liberty pending examination (Ohio Revised Code Section 5122.10). The proper name of the form is Application for Emergency Admission.

Information about who can submit an Emergency Admission Application and the requirements for that admission can also be found in Ohio Revised Code Section 5122.10. It is important to know that a hospital cannot hold a patient against his/her will unless patient meets criteria for emergency hospitalization according to ORC 5122.10. The ADAMHS Board works with local law enforcement, courts, hospitals, community behavioral health organizations and the state with regard to Emergency Admissions that occur in Cuyahoga County.
