Are you in recovery from a mental health and/or substance use disorder? Do you want to use your experience and recovery to help peers with their recovery journey? If so, you should think about becoming a DBH Certified Peer Recovery Supporter!
Individuals who successfully complete training will be eligible to apply for PRS Certification in Ohio. If you have criminal charges or are on probation/parole, please click here for additional information regarding PRS Certification requirements. Individuals applying for the Ohio Peer Recovery Supporter Certification must have a high school diploma or GED (there is no waiver or exception to this requirement).
Update December 2024: The DBH Bureau of Recovery Supports is pleased to announce that incarcerated individuals, as well as those on probation and parole, can be certified as peer supporters. Previously, these individuals were able to complete peer supporter training, but were not able to complete the certification process while in custody or under court sanctions. This change in interpretation of Ohio Administrative Code Rule 5122-29-15.1 expands access to meaningful employment for more individuals upon release.
2026 DBH 40-Hour Peer Recovery Supporter (PRS) Trainings
Thank you for your interest in the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) 40-hour IN-PERSON Peer Recovery Supporter (PRS) Training. The PRS Training is hosted by the Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services Board of Cuyahoga County and Thrive Peer Recovery Services taking place in Solon, Ohio. 8:30 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.
30-minute lunch break. Lunch is not provided.

The DBH 40-hour PRS Training is a live, interactive training that teaches prospective Certified Peer Recovery Supporters (CPRS) who self-identify as being in recovery from a mental health or substance use disorder to use their experience to help their Peers with the same lived experience. Prospective CPRS will engage in role-play activities and learn the skills necessary to offer high quality Peer Support. Upon successful completion of PRS training, perspective CPRS will be eligible to apply for Adult Peer Recovery Supporter Certification in Ohio. To attend training, you must be personally in recovery from a mental health and/or substance use disorder and be willing to share your personal story appropriately in a group setting. Having a friend or family member in recovery will not qualify you to attend this training. Please review the attached PRS Training Guidelines.
To register for in-person training, please complete the below (3) Steps:
Please note that your spot in training is not confirmed until you have completed all requirements below and received an e-mail confirming your registration. Spots in the training are awarded on a first come, first serve basis, as prospective CPRS complete the below requirements.
STEP 1: Complete the attached Registration Form & save the form to your computer. Form must be typed (not handwritten).
STEP 2: Complete the free Ohio Learn 16-hour Peer Recovery Supporter Training Curriculum and save your completion certificate to your computer. Visit this website to get started on the curriculum: https://dbh.ohio.gov/community-partners/peer-supporters/resources/ohio-learn. Attached please find a step-by-step guide to register the Ohio Learn curriculum. The curriculum takes approximately 16-20 hours to complete, so we recommend beginning as a soon as possible. * Note: If you previously completed this coursework on eBased Academy, the eBased Academy 16-hour Certified Peer Recovery Supporter Training Learning plan completion certificate is still accepted.
STEP 3: Submit BOTH your Registration Form AND your Ohio Learn 16-hour Certified Peer Recovery Supporter Training Curriculum by e-mail to Myra Henderson at: henderson@adamhscc.org
